Had a good night’s sleep & I’m up at 6:15 to go and catch another sunrise. Cloudy and some early color, but soon the interference from the clouds is too much for el sol and there’s nothing to see. Oh, well, in a way I’m kind of glad – the wind this morning is absolutely insane & I’m freezing and all too glad to go back to the room and sleep some more.

By 8:30 I’ve had enough sleep and get up to retrieve Tim’s birthday cards from my suitcase and set them out for when he wakes up. Do some reading, birthday boy’s finally up. Sing happy birthday to him and hand him his cards – one mushy, one funny. He just loves the funny one – a burping Homer Simpson card that he had loads of fun with on the plane going home (more on that later).
Pack the beach bag, throw our suits on & top off with t-shirts to go to breakfast and try to get Roy on the walkie talkie – no luck…. Hmmm, wonder if he made it back ok from Tulum? Didn’t see him last night and now I’m a tad worried. We head up to M&Js and the outside chairs are stacked up. Pedro motions us inside – too windy for outdoor dining today. Drat! I love having breakfast and watching and listening to the waves. We get a table next to the window, though, so it’s the next best thing. I order the ham & asparagus cazuela, coffee & OJ (I cannot get enough of the incredibly sweet OJ here!) Tim opts for toast, coffee & chocolate milk again. Very delicioso!

Decide to stop at the Vistalmar on the way to the beach to see what’s going on with the barracuda bash – Rosie’s flipping out and still trying to decide what they’re going to do. Harbormaster said no go for today – supposedly twelve foot swells out at sea thanks to this Norte that refuses to leave. The plan now is fishing on Thursday and Friday, with the party Friday night. This changes everything… we had planned to rent our golf cart tomorrow, do Punta Sur, go back to Playa Tiburon for lunch (Roy wants to try Tic n Xic) and go to Karyn & Phil’s to see the house. We leave on Friday. Bummer! We want to keep our shirts, so Rosie graciously refunds us the dinner cost and we’ll try to get down to the beach to see the gang coming back with their catches of the day tomorrow. I’m really bummed about it, but we did get to meet some great people and have our very nice bash shirts… there’s always next year. I looked into the courtyard behind the Vistalmar & see a funny sight – worthy of a picture! A john with airconditioning?

We run into Jamqueen & Alan as we near the beach, chat a little about the new fishing schedule and our disappointment, and hope to run into eachother later.
Park our carcasses at Sergio’s once again, Tim reads & I’m scanning the beach, people watching. There’s a couple directly behind us laying out on a blanket. I need to gouge out my mind’s eye – 1. the guy is wearing a Speedo (if I want to see that much detail I can stick a bunch of grapes in a sock) 2. He’s got it rolled into a thong for maximum sun exposure. Why, baby Jesus, why???? GROSS!!!

An older woman (I’d say in her mid-late 60’s) with a great figure whips her top off and puts on quite a show for anyone watching while she puts on her sunscreen – I give Tim heads up & he checks it out (hey, it’s his birthday!) We’re thinking that she’s sporting store bought ones – quite perky for someone her age with chi-chi’s that big! She’s also got a rose vine tattoo going all around her waist right above her bikini bottom (groovy granny!) quite a brazen soul, too – she’s not 5 feet from Sergio’s bar where it’s most crowded & where there’s the most traffic!
Note on topless sunbathing: like Speedos and stretch pants in size 1X, chi-chi’s that lay flat and hang down to one’s navel just should not be exposed in public, sorry. And they don’t look any better after a couple of beers, according to Tim.

An elderly couple arrives and are scoping out a good spot to park. I’m cracking up because the wife, to me, anyway looks just like Hallmark Card’s Maxine when she’s depicted on cards in summer attire. Beret on her head, round sunglasses, shorts pulled up high almost under her boobs, bathing suit top, sandals and black ankle socks. I HAD to get a picture of that! I point her out to Tim & he agrees! Too funny!! There’s also a wife who has her husband buried in the sand and is supplying him with both male and female body parts – hmmmmm

Snap a few more pics, hit the bano and then yack it up a little while with my “family” Mike, Diane & company. I have a really nice conversation with Sergio – what a great guy! Very insightful, brilliant businessman, and a diplomat. He should definitely run for office on the Island someday! He buys me a beer, we talk some more and just as I’m walking away, I spot Roy heading towards me!! Phew, he’s alive and not in jail!! I was beginning to fear coming home without him and having his mother put some kind of evil Lebanese hex on me!
Turns out he got to Tulum just as they were closing yesterday and decided to stay overnight in a hut on the beach for $20. Said it was the best sleep he’s ever had! He got up early and was the first person at the ruins and got some fabulous pictures with absolutely no one in them – they are magnificent! He wants to go back to his room, so I point out where we are so we can meet up later.

Angelica comes by with her goods with Jacob and Maria in tow. I buy a few things from her and then dig out a bunch of little hair clips for Maria and give Jacob another hand puppet (this time a Zebra). What a cute little boy… he’s “biting” me with the puppet, making growly sounds and I’m doing my best to act scared & make him laugh. He wants to play… loves being thrown in the air and then planted back down in the sand. Angelica asks me if I’d watch the kids while she goes to sell her wares because Jacob’s having so much fun… this was in Spanish, yet I knew exactly what she was asking. Maria wants to stay with her mom, but Jacob was having a blast, climbing all over Tim, parking himself on his shoulders, putting on Tim’s sunglasses and using Tim’s head like a bongo drum! Good thing there’s no hangover today! He also discovers the joy of jumping off the back of Tim’s beach chair. Such a happy little boy!

A man comes by selling wooden whistles of various sizes. Jacob is pulling my hand and pointing at him, saying dos pesos! Dos pesos! No, they weren’t – I scraped up all the change I had in my bag – I think I had 17 pesos and a US quarter, so I went over to the guy with Jacob, point at the smallest whistle and put my hand out to show him how much I had. He shook his head – I pointed to Jacob and told the guy that was all I had, please, it’s for the little boy. I guess he was as much a sucker as I was for his cuteness and takes my change and gave Jacob his whistle. Let the noise begin!! He’s so proud of it – goes over to Tim & just blasts away on it… climbs back up on his shoulders & decides it’s a good drumstick to use on his head… what a saint Tim is – he was laughing the whole time.

Angelica comes back after about a half hour to collect him. Hugs & kisses for the kids, huge hug & kiss and many “muchas gracias amiga” from mom. We say adios for now

We head up to the bar for some ceviche to hold me till dinner – YUM again! Have some beers and enjoy the scenery while we wait for the sunset. Pepper the parott is back to enjoy and poses nicely for me. Meet Lee, a board lurker who offers to take some great shots of us with the sunset behind us – Thanks, Lee!

After another beauty, we head back to the room, shower & dress for dinner. Get Roy on the walkie and do a little window shopping. Tim wants baseball field tacos for his birthday dinner! Catch the bus, “Tacos Campos por favor”. A fun bumpy ride & we’re there lickety split. YIKES!! The menu’s all in Spanish! Pretty much able to figure it out, but thanks to Jack from MN, who offers to share his table with us, the menu’s translated and we know what we’re getting. We all chose one each of pork and chorizo – tons of fixins ohmyGoddelicious!!!

Karyn & Phil arrive with another couple, we chat a bit – they’re famished from a long day of working on the house – we say our goodbyes and plan to catch up with them tomorrow. I found out when we got home, after reading Lisa in Denver’s trip report that the couple with Karyn & Phil was Lisa and Isla Rick!! Dag nab it, that could have been one crazy evening!! I thought that maybe they were prospective renters and didn’t want to scare them away with my motormouth!! Oh well – another time, Lisa – we’ll just have to make up for lost time with extra madness!!
Here comes the bus, so we hop back on & head back to town. We decide to head over to Sergio’s, as Jorge told us to come back for a special birthday drink for Tim. Roy heads out in search of adventure #6.
Jorge is all by his lonesome and happy to see us. Order a couple of cervesas, chat and laugh about lord knows what. OK, birthday boy, time for your special drink. A flaming Mayan Sacrifice – a concoction of Tequila, Kaluha and Xtabentun, lit on fire, which must be drunk through a straw while still flaming! Very tasty, but after a second round, also VERY dangerous! We hang out a little while longer, say gracias and buenos noches to Jorge and start back towards the room… a fun stumble indeed!

As we make our way up Hidalgo, we see Roy with Tiffany who looks absolutely stunning tonight! She blames the dress on having no more clean laundry, but no apologies needed – she looks great!

I know we did a shot of something, but the rest is pretty vague… my pictures are no help at all, as in my impaired state (o.k. downright sloppy drunkenness!) I don’t pop up the flash and the pictures come out looking much like the way I was seeing things! Good times!!
Let’s just assume it was ni-nite my honeybaby, ni-nite my love.
Coming up next: Golf Cart Day!! Stay tuned, folks!
